A Beautiful Stay at Passalacqua, Lake Como

Lake Como view from an elegant Italian villa

There is a particular kind of luxury that doesn’t need to announce itself. It is felt in the pace of a place, in the view you wake up to, in the way a room has been considered rather than simply decorated. Passalacqua, set in Moltrasio on the western shore of Lake Como, has that quality in abundance.

Originally created as an aristocratic villa at the end of the 18th century, the house was designed by Milanese architect Carlo Felice Soave for Count Andrea Lucini-Passalacqua. The property has a remarkable cultural history too: composer Vincenzo Bellini stayed here in 1831 and worked on La Sonnambula. After changing hands over the generations, the villa was acquired by the De Santis family in 2018 and reopened as Passalacqua in 2022 after an extensive restoration.

A private world above Lake Como

What makes Passalacqua feel so distinctive is its scale. There are just 24 guest accommodations, divided between three different buildings — the grand Villa, the more intimate Palazz and Casa al Lago, which sits close to the water. Each has its own personality, but together they create the feeling of being invited into a beautiful private home rather than arriving at a conventional resort.

The estate unfolds across seven acres of landscaped gardens that descend in terraces towards a private jetty. The gardens themselves date back to the 18th century and have been restored as a sequence of outdoor “rooms”, with fountains, ancient cypress trees, a kitchen garden, a bocce court, an old pergola and quiet corners overlooking the lake. It is the kind of setting that encourages you to stop looking at the time.

The interiors: romantic, layered and unmistakably Italian

Inside, Passalacqua embraces decoration rather than restraint. Silk, stuccowork, chandeliers, frescoes, antiques and richly patterned fabrics give the rooms a sense of history without making them feel museum-like. The main Villa holds twelve rooms and suites, including the expansive Suite Bellini, while the Palazz offers a warmer, more cocoon-like atmosphere. Casa al Lago has four rooms set close to the lake, with garden access and water views.

There is something refreshing about a hotel that allows beauty to be expressive. Nothing feels overly matched or reduced to a neutral “luxury” formula. Instead, the property feels collected over time — elegant, personal and full of detail.

Long lunches, aperitivo and the pleasure of staying in

Food is treated as part of the rhythm of the house. Passalacqua describes its approach as “grand villa cuisine”, led by chef Viviana Varese, with everything from candlelit dinners and relaxed al fresco lunches to spontaneous pasta-making sessions and wine tastings. The mood is less about ticking off reservations and more about letting one moment lead naturally into the next.

Aperitivo is taken seriously, as it should be in this part of Italy. A Negroni or glass of champagne on the terrace, followed by dinner as the lights begin to appear across the lake, feels entirely in keeping with the spirit of the property.

The details that make the stay

Passalacqua is approximately an hour from Milan and around fifteen minutes from the town of Como, but once inside the estate there is very little reason to rush elsewhere. The pool sits on a garden terrace below the Villa, the lake can be explored by boat from the private jetty, and even the hotel’s bright orange vintage Fiat 500 Spiaggina adds a playful Italian note.

For travellers drawn to hotels with a strong sense of place, Passalacqua offers something increasingly rare: grandeur without distance, history without heaviness and service designed around the feeling of being genuinely looked after.

The Steph Adams edit

Plan this as a stay rather than a stop. Leave room for a slow breakfast, time in the gardens, an afternoon on the lake and an evening that begins with aperitivo and doesn’t need an agenda. Lake Como is beautiful from almost any angle, but Passalacqua makes the experience feel intimate — as though the landscape has briefly become your own.

Good to know: Passalacqua is in Moltrasio on Lake Como. The hotel has 24 rooms and suites across the Villa, Palazz and Casa al Lago, with landscaped gardens and a private jetty. For current room categories, seasonal opening information and reservations, visit the official Passalacqua website.
