Head to our latest issue of LAQUA Magazine to view this lovely interview with Samantha Brett
Firstly, tell us how you started working at Channel 7 news as one of their reporters?
Sam: I was working in Hobart covering the federal election and filing international stories for networks like CNN and CBS while working for Sky News Australia when I left to join the Seven Newsroom in Sydney. I was newly engaged to a man in Sydney and thought it would be the perfect opportunity to move back to the city I was from. I started in general news covering everything from crime to politics, and then moved into the role of the court reporter. After maternity leave I returned to a role as a presenter of the Early News at 5AM and general weekend reporter, which I love doing!
What was your first break in journalism?
Sam: My first big break came during a stint of work experience at a small commuter magazine called 9to5 Magazine. I was just fetching coffee when the magazine relaunched and I was asked to write a permanent column. I was still at university and doing work experience at various television networks – but suddenly I was a columnist going to red carpet events, interviewing celebrities, writing news stories and living out my dream. I hadn’t even finished my degree!
Some of the challenges involved in working as a reporter?
Sam: As a news reporter for Seven News, there are so many challenges every single day. Working in courts and crime, it’s the actual
stories and the people involved that are the most challenging part. We are often confronted with accidents, murder, death, sexual assault, fraud …the worst in humanity. The most challenging part is telling their stories and doing justice to the victims that I meet day in, day out. And deadlines are always challenging too!
How have you juggled your career with just have a new born baby? Tell us how you try and fit it all in?
Having a baby definitely made things difficult! But I am so passionate about my job that I was extremely eager to return to work as soon as possible. Luckily, my husband is a very hands on father and has definitely taken over the parenting duties when I am at work!
Some of your 3 x favourite fashion items and 3 x beauty items you are currently obsessing over?
I am loving Yeojin Bae dresses for work; Alex Perry’s new collection for after dark; Valentino shoes, and the YSL blogger purse. Beauty – I’m obsessed with Ellis Faas foundation, ultraceuticals skincare and Kate Somerville scrub.
If you were to give one piece of advice on love, what would it be?
Work on becoming “a catch” yourself and let the man find you!
